I am Alp Ulgen (he/him). I am the founder of Art-Led Psychotherapy. I adapt my approach to each individual. There is no one-size-fits-all since
I am Alp Ulgen (he/him). I am the founder of Art-Led Psychotherapy. I offer a safe, confidential, compassionate space to provide art-led psychotherapy, an expressive form of talking therapy that uses the arts to improve physical, mental, and emotional well-being. I adapt my approach to each individual. There is no one-size-fits-all since we have a complex system of relationships with others and the surrounding environment.
While we cannot change what has happened to us and control or prevent life’s challenges, learning how to navigate them and find balance is possible. I can support you in discovering new ways of being to build strength, courage, resilience and thrive.
The arts can be used to express emotions that may be difficult to put into words, enhance communication non-verbally, encourage self-expression and self-exploration, and provide a safe and non-intrusive way to share and promote vulnerability in therapy.
Prior art-making experience is not needed, as the arts are used purely for communication and experimentation during the sessions. Working with arts can be as simple as using metaphors and postcards, placing objects in a sand tray, doodling or scribbling with both hands, using clay and creating magazine collage art. There is no right or wrong way of using the arts.
I promote self-awareness through dialogue about your artwork or chosen objects/images and working together to support you gain insight into your emotions, triggers, and coping mechanisms. I believe in the importance of the mind-body connection and can help you regulate and link your body and mind, reduce stress, and relax.
I am a qualified Integrative Arts Psychotherapist, specialising in trauma-induced complex depression and anxiety, complex trauma, and developmental trauma. I have an interest in working with anger and medically unexplained chronic pain. I have a PG Certificate in Therapeutic Arts, a PG Certificate in Child, Adolescent and Family Mental Well-being: Multidisciplinary Practice, a Certificate in Initiatic Art Therapy and an MA in Integrative Arts Psychotherapy. I continue to grow professionally, regularly completing CPDs and training courses.
